About Ringgold

Ringgold is the county seat of Catoosa County, Georgia, about 17 miles southeast of downtown Chattanooga. U.S. Routes 41 and 76 run through town as Nashville Street, and Interstate 75 passes through the south side of the city at exit 348.

The town was founded in 1846 and incorporated in 1847. It is named for Samuel Ringgold, a hero of the Battle of Palo Alto in the Mexican-American War. The Ringgold Depot still carries bullet marks from the Civil War. The locomotive "The General" came through Ringgold during the Great Locomotive Chase on April 12, 1862, and the Battle of Ringgold Gap was fought here on November 27, 1863.

Dolly Parton married Carl Dean in Ringgold in May 1966. The 2020 census counted 3,414 residents.
