Neighborhood Guide
St. Elmo
A charming historic neighborhood at the base of Lookout Mountain. Home to the Incline Railway, local shops, and a strong neighborhood identity.
About St. Elmo
St. Elmo is the neighborhood that makes people fall in love with Chattanooga. It sits at the base of Lookout Mountain, wedged between the mountain's steep western slope and the old industrial stretches of Broad Street, and it's got the kind of small-town charm that feels genuine because it is. No one manufactured the vibe here. It just happened - slowly, organically, and with a lot of front porch sitting.
The name comes from a wildly popular 1866 novel by Augusta Jane Evans, and the neighborhood has been here almost as long. Victorian-era cottages, tree-lined streets, and the rumble of the Incline Railway heading up the mountain - St. Elmo feels like a place that knows exactly what it is and has no interest in being anything else.
The Incline
The Incline Railway is St. Elmo's most famous resident. Built in 1895, it climbs Lookout Mountain at a 72.7% grade - one of the steepest passenger railways in the world. The station sits right at the end of St. Elmo Avenue, and the sound of the cars ascending and descending is the neighborhood's unofficial soundtrack.
For visitors, the Incline is a must-ride. For locals, it's more like a landmark you walk past every day and occasionally take visiting family members on. Either way, it anchors the neighborhood both physically and psychologically. When someone says "St. Elmo," the Incline is usually the first thing that comes to mind. But stick around and you'll realize it's just the beginning.
St. Elmo Avenue
St. Elmo Avenue is the neighborhood's spine - a compact commercial stretch that packs an impressive amount of character into a few blocks. This is where the neighborhood eats, drinks, shops, and hangs out.
1885 Grill is the anchor restaurant, and it's earned that status with over 3,300 reviews and the kind of menu that draws people from across the city. Named for the year the Incline opened (close enough), it does elevated American food in a space that feels right for the neighborhood - nice enough for a date, casual enough that nobody cares if you show up in hiking boots.
Goodman Coffee Roasters is the morning spot. They roast their own beans, the drinks are dialed in, and the St. Elmo location has become a community hub in the same way that good coffee shops always do - people come for the espresso and stay for the conversation. On weekend mornings, you'll find the full cross-section of the neighborhood here: mountain bikers fueling up, young parents wrangling toddlers, retirees reading the paper.
Common Table on Broad Street does exactly what the name promises - community-minded dining with a seasonal menu that changes often enough to keep regulars coming back. It's the kind of place where the food is thoughtful without being fussy.
The Business Scene
St. Elmo has attracted a surprising density of small businesses for a neighborhood its size. The commercial spaces along St. Elmo Avenue and Tennessee Avenue have filled up with a mix that feels curated even though it wasn't.
Headspa'ce is a standout - a head spa and wellness studio with an almost perfect 5.0 rating across 370 reviews, which is the kind of number that makes other businesses jealous. Buchanan's Barber Lounge and Tapers & Taps handle grooming with style and strong followings. Lavender Glow Massage Studio and Azalea Med Spa round out the wellness options.
Saint Elmo Dental Co does dentistry with personality - 4.8 stars and over 420 reviews, which is remarkable for a dental office. Atlas Total Health Chiropractic and Jenks Family Medicine keep the neighborhood healthy. And Chattanooga School of Language adds an unexpected cultural element - a 5.0-rated language school right in the middle of a neighborhood that most people associate with trains and hiking.
Living in St. Elmo
The housing stock in St. Elmo is one of its biggest draws. Victorian cottages with wraparound porches, Craftsman bungalows with original details, and the occasional quirky conversion that gives the neighborhood its eclectic feel. The streets are walkable, the yards are shaded by mature trees, and the architecture has the kind of character that new construction tries to imitate but never quite nails.
Real estate in St. Elmo has gotten more competitive as the neighborhood's reputation has grown. What was once an affordable alternative to downtown has become desirable in its own right, and prices reflect that. But compared to similar walkable, character-rich neighborhoods in Nashville or Asheville, St. Elmo still represents good value - especially considering that you're steps from world-class hiking and a short drive (or bike ride) from everything downtown has to offer.
The neighborhood is fiercely protective of its identity. The St. Elmo community association is active, and residents tend to be the kind of people who show up to meetings, organize block parties, and actually know the names of the people three houses down. It's not performative community - it's the real thing.
Getting There and Getting Around
St. Elmo is a 10-minute drive from downtown Chattanooga via Broad Street, which runs straight south from the city center to the base of Lookout Mountain. By bike, it's an easy ride on relatively flat terrain. The neighborhood itself is very walkable - you can get from the Incline station to the commercial strip on St. Elmo Avenue in a few minutes on foot.
The St. Elmo Fire Hall serves as a community event space and landmark - if you see it, you're in the right place. From here, the mountain trails are minutes away. The Incline takes you up to Point Park and the top of Lookout Mountain. The trail to Sunset Rock starts nearby. And the whole neighborhood sits at the gateway to everything the mountain has to offer.
St. Elmo is one of those neighborhoods that makes you understand why people talk about Chattanooga the way they do. It's walkable, it's beautiful, it's affordable (relatively speaking), and it's got the kind of community spirit that bigger cities lost decades ago. The Incline gets all the press, but the neighborhood around it is the real attraction.
