Best Tacos in Chattanooga

From authentic street-style taquerias to creative fusion spots, here are the best tacos in Chattanooga - including the food trucks most people don't know about.

Chattanooga's taco scene is better than most people realize. You've got everything from authentic street-style spots run by families who know what they're doing, to creative takes on the taco that work better than they probably should. The best part? Most of these places are affordable enough that you can try three different spots in one week without feeling guilty about it.

Here's where to find the best tacos in town.

The Authentic Picks

Taqueria Jalisco

This is the real deal. Taqueria Jalisco on Market Street serves the kind of tacos you'd find at a street stand in Mexico - corn tortillas, simple toppings done right, and flavors that don't need to hide behind gimmicks. The al pastor is excellent, the carnitas fall apart the way they should, and the salsa verde has some actual kick to it. Small, no-frills space. Order at the counter and don't overthink it. The lingua (beef tongue) is better than you think it's going to be.

Tacos El Tote

This food truck near St. Elmo has built a serious following, and it's easy to understand why. The tacos are cheap, fast, and genuinely good. They keep the menu simple - meat, onion, cilantro, lime, salsa - the way street tacos should be. The truck doesn't always keep the same hours, so check before you drive out. When it's open though, this is some of the best money you'll spend on food in Chattanooga.

Taqueria Alba

Tucked on Brainerd Road, Taqueria Alba is the kind of spot you'd drive right past if nobody told you about it. That would be a mistake. The tacos here are straightforward and honest - good meat, fresh tortillas, proper salsa. The birria tacos, when they have them, are worth a special trip. No fancy plating, no Instagram angles. Just solid food at fair prices.

Creative Takes

Mayan Kitchen

Mayan Kitchen on Broad Street brings something different to the table - Central American flavors that you won't find at most Mexican restaurants. The tacos here lean creative, with fillings like slow-cooked pork in banana leaf and handmade tortillas that taste like someone actually cares about them. The menu goes well beyond tacos (the pupusas are outstanding), but when you're specifically craving a taco with some personality, this is the spot. Over 3,000 Google reviews and still holding a 4.5 - that's not easy in downtown Chattanooga.

Agave & Rye

Agave & Rye is loud, over-the-top, and their tacos are the size of your head. This isn't where you go for subtle. It's where you go when you want a taco loaded with smoked brisket, mac and cheese, crispy onion strings, and some kind of sauce that has no business being that good. The Chick Magnet (Nashville hot chicken taco) is a fan favorite. Great tequila and bourbon selection too. Come hungry, leave with leftovers.

The Food Truck Scene

Taqueria la Delicia

Down on Rossville Blvd, Taqueria la Delicia operates as a food truck with a dedicated following. The prices are low, the portions are fair, and the tacos taste like somebody's grandmother made them - in the best possible way. Not much in the way of ambiance (it's a food truck on a boulevard), but the food speaks for itself. Great for a quick lunch when you're in the south end of town.

Attack of the Tatsu

Okay, this is technically a ramen spot. But Attack of the Tatsu runs taco specials that are worth including here because they're that good. The fusion angle works - think Asian-inspired fillings in a taco format, with sauces and toppings you wouldn't expect but somehow make perfect sense. Their brick-and-mortar on Georgia Ave has become one of the Southside's most popular spots. If they're running taco specials when you visit, don't skip them.

The Tex-Mex Favorites

Honey Seed

Honey Seed is a health-focused restaurant on the Southside, but their tacos are one of the best things on the menu. Think fresh, clean flavors - grilled fish tacos with mango slaw, chicken tacos with avocado crema, and some solid vegetarian options. Not your greasy Tex-Mex taco (nothing wrong with those, just a different lane). If you want a taco that makes you feel good about what you're eating without sacrificing flavor, Honey Seed delivers.

Quick Tips

  • Cash is king at some truck spots. Taqueria Jalisco and the Rossville Blvd trucks may not always accept cards. Bring cash to be safe.
  • Tuesday is taco night at several downtown restaurants. Check social media for weekly specials at your favorite spots.
  • Don't skip the salsas. The house-made salsas at Taqueria Jalisco and Tacos El Tote are half the experience.
  • Lunch beats dinner. Most of these spots are less crowded at lunch, and some food trucks only operate during daytime hours.
  • Brainerd Road and Rossville Blvd are where you'll find the most authentic options - it's worth exploring both corridors.
