About Fort Oglethorpe
Fort Oglethorpe is a city in northwest Georgia, about 9 miles south of Chattanooga on U.S. Route 27. Most of it is in Catoosa County, with a smaller part in Walker County.
The city grew out of an Army post. The U.S. Army established the Chickamauga Post here in 1902 and later named it Fort Oglethorpe, after James Oglethorpe, the founder of the Colony of Georgia. During World War II it was a major training center for the Women's Army Corps. The post was declared surplus in 1947, and the town incorporated two years later, in 1949.
Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park takes up the southern two-thirds of the city's area. The 2020 census counted 10,423 residents.
