Sunset Rock Trail

Iconic overlook of Chattanooga and the Tennessee River from Lookout Mountain

The Best Sunset Spot in Chattanooga

Ask any local where to catch the best sunset in town and they'll point you straight to Sunset Rock. It's not a secret - the parking lot fills up fast on clear evenings - but the view is genuinely that good. You're standing on a wide rock ledge about 1,800 feet up Lookout Mountain, looking out over the Tennessee River as it bends through the valley below. The city lights start flickering on as the sun drops behind the ridgeline. It hits different every time.

Getting There

The trail itself is short - about 1.5 miles round trip from the parking area on Ochs Highway. Most people finish it in under an hour, and the path is well-marked through the woods. It's part of the larger Bluff Trail network on Lookout Mountain, so you can extend your hike if you want. The terrain is moderate with some rocky sections and a few spots where you'll scramble over tree roots, but nothing that requires special gear. Wear decent shoes and you're fine.

Parking is at the Cravens House trailhead area on Ochs Highway. There's no fee. On weekends, especially during fall when the leaves are turning, arrive at least an hour before sunset to grab a spot. During the week, you'll usually have more room to spread out on the rock.

What to Expect

The overlook itself is a large flat rock outcropping - plenty of room for a dozen or more people to sit and take in the view. You'll see Moccasin Bend, the Tennessee River, downtown Chattanooga, and on clear days, the ridges stretching out toward Signal Mountain and beyond. Photographers love this spot for obvious reasons. The golden hour light reflecting off the river is the kind of thing that makes you put your phone down and just look.

There's no railing or barrier at the edge, so keep that in mind if you're bringing kids. Dogs are welcome on leash. Some people bring picnic blankets and snacks to make an evening of it - that's a solid move.

Connecting with Other Trails

Sunset Rock sits along the Bluff Trail, which connects to several other routes on Lookout Mountain. You can continue past Sunset Rock to Raccoon Mountain trails, or head in the other direction toward Point Park. The whole trail system is maintained by the National Park Service as part of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, so the paths are well-kept.

For a longer outing, combine Sunset Rock with a visit to Point Park at the top of Lookout Mountain, or ride the Incline Railway from St. Elmo up the mountain first, then hike over to the overlook from there. It's about a 20-minute walk from the upper Incline station to Sunset Rock.

Tips from Locals

Sunrise works too - fewer people, different kind of beautiful. The east-facing view catches morning light in a way that's quieter and more private. Pack a thermos of coffee from Mean Mug Coffeehouse and you're set.

After your hike, the St. Elmo neighborhood at the base of the mountain has Niedlov's Cafe & Bakery for some of the best bread in town, and Bluegrass Grill for breakfast and brunch that's worth the inevitable wait.
