Best Outdoor Dining in Chattanooga

River views, rooftop cocktails, beer gardens, and hidden courtyards - the best places to eat outside in Chattanooga.

Chattanooga was built for eating outside. Between the river, the mountains, and about nine months of usable weather, outdoor dining here isn't a novelty - it's a way of life. Some patios offer views you'd pay admission for. Others are just a couple of picnic tables on a sidewalk. Both have their charm.

Here's where to eat outdoors in Chattanooga, from riverfront decks to tucked-away courtyards.

The River Views

Boathouse Rotisserie & Raw Bar

If you want the single best outdoor dining view in Chattanooga, this is it. The Boathouse sits right on the Tennessee River with a massive deck that looks out over the water. On a warm evening, there's nothing like it. The rotisserie chicken and raw bar oysters pair perfectly with watching the sun drop behind the mountains. Arrive before the sunset rush for the best seats.

Parkway Pourhouse

Right on Riverfront Parkway near the Walnut Street Bridge, Parkway Pourhouse has a patio that catches the evening light beautifully. The craft beer selection is deep, the burgers are solid, and the location puts you steps from the riverfront walking path. It's a natural stop before or after a bridge walk.

River Drifters

Out on Suck Creek Road, River Drifters feels like you've left the city even though you're only 10 minutes away. The outdoor space is relaxed and slightly wild - picnic tables under trees, string lights, and a view that reminds you why people love living near water. The food is creative pub fare. It's worth the short drive from North Shore.

The Patios Worth Fighting For

State of Confusion

The Southside's State of Confusion has one of the most popular patios in the city. The outdoor space is spacious and well-designed - there's room to breathe, which isn't always true of restaurant patios. The menu covers a lot of ground (tacos, burgers, salads, bowls) and the cocktail program is strong. Weekend afternoons here feel like a block party.

Feed Table and Tavern

Feed's sidewalk seating on Main Street puts you right in the heart of the Southside scene. It's not a big patio, but the tables are well-spaced and the people-watching is top tier. The food inside is excellent - farm-to-table done without pretension - and it's even better when you eat it outside. Weekend brunch on the patio is a local move.

Universal Joint

Universal Joint's patio on Lookout Street is big, dog-friendly, and exactly the kind of chill outdoor space you want on a Tuesday night. Picnic tables, cold beer, solid bar food. They don't overthink it, and that's the appeal. This is where people bring their dogs, their kids, and their appetite for a good time without any fuss.

Rooftops & Elevated Dining

STIR

STIR on Market Street has a rooftop patio that overlooks downtown Chattanooga. The restaurant itself is one of the city's most reliable fine-casual spots, and sitting on the roof with a cocktail and a sunset takes it up a notch. The menu is approachable Southern - think pimento cheese, good steaks, creative salads. Reservations help.

1885 Grill

Down in St. Elmo, 1885 Grill has outdoor seating that puts you right on the neighborhood's main street. The mountain views from the St. Elmo Historic District are a nice bonus. The grill focuses on Southern comfort food with a modern edge - the pork chop and the fried green tomatoes are both excellent. It feels like eating on your porch, except the food is better.

The Beer Garden Experience

OddStory Brewing: The Greenhouse

OddStory's Greenhouse location on MLK is designed for outdoor drinking and eating. The space is a converted greenhouse - open air, lots of plants, plenty of natural light. They have a rotating food truck schedule to pair with their beers. It's one of the most unique outdoor dining experiences in Chattanooga, especially on a cool evening.

Hutton & Smith Brewing

Hutton & Smith's taproom on MLK Boulevard has a solid outdoor area that fills up on nice afternoons. The beer is excellent - they focus on balanced, drinkable styles - and the rotating food truck lineup means there's always something different to eat. The outdoor space has a casual, come-as-you-are energy that fits the Southside brewery district perfectly.

Brewhaus

Brewhaus on Frazier Avenue combines a German beer hall concept with a North Shore patio. The outdoor space looks out onto one of Chattanooga's most walkable streets. The beer list is long and international, the pretzels are legitimately good, and the patio stays lively from lunch through late evening. It's a people-watching spot disguised as a restaurant.

Hidden Courtyards & Quiet Spots

Rembrandt's Coffee House

The terrace at Rembrandt's in the Bluff View Art District is one of Chattanooga's best-kept breakfast and lunch secrets. Overlooking the river and the Hunter Museum, the patio seating here is tucked above the city in a quiet pocket of beauty. Grab a pastry and an espresso, sit outside, and just exist for a while. It's that kind of place.

The Daily Ration

The Daily Ration's patio on Dartmouth Street has a neighborhood feel that bigger restaurants can't replicate. It's small, shaded, and right in the North Shore residential area. Dogs welcome. Coffee is great. The food menu is short but everything on it is done well. This is a locals-only kind of patio - until now, anyway.

Calliope

Calliope on MLK has a small but inviting outdoor space that's perfect for a warm evening dinner. The restaurant is one of Chattanooga's finest - creative, seasonal, and always surprising - and eating on the patio adds a laid-back dimension to what's otherwise a refined dining experience. If the weather cooperates, ask for an outside table.

Outdoor dining in Chattanooga runs from April through October without much effort, and with a jacket, you can stretch it to both ends. Looking for dog-friendly patios? We've got a list for that too. And if the weather turns, check out our rainy day guide for indoor options.
