Tennessee Aquarium

13,000+ animals across two buildings. Penguins, sharks, otters, and more.

Two Buildings, 13,000 Animals

The Tennessee Aquarium sits right on the riverfront in downtown Chattanooga, and it's not what you'd expect from a mid-size city. This place is legitimately world-class. Two separate buildings - the River Journey and Ocean Journey - cover freshwater and saltwater ecosystems from the Appalachian mountains all the way to coral reefs. Over 13,000 animals live here across 12,000 species, and the exhibits are designed so well that you'll lose a solid three to four hours without even noticing.

River Journey

Start here if you want the full experience. River Journey traces the path of water from a misty Appalachian cove forest down to the Tennessee River and eventually to the Gulf of Mexico. The top floor is genuinely beautiful - a living forest canopy with sunlight filtering through real trees while fish swim in tanks below you. You'll work your way down through river otters (crowd favorites for good reason), giant catfish, alligators, and one of the largest freshwater exhibits in the country.

The river otter habitat usually draws the biggest crowd, and honestly the otters earn it. They're constantly playing, diving, and showing off. Get there early in the morning or right after feeding time for the best action.

Ocean Journey

This building goes deep - literally. Ocean Journey takes you from coastal wetlands down to open ocean, with a massive shark tank as the centerpiece. Walk through a glass tunnel surrounded by sharks, rays, and sea turtles gliding past at arm's length. The jellyfish gallery is mesmerizing, with color-changing lights that make the moon jellies glow. Penguins are on the lower level, and they're as entertaining as the otters.

The touch tanks are scattered throughout both buildings - kids go straight for these. Stingrays, horseshoe crabs, sea stars. Staff are always nearby to explain what you're touching and why it feels weird.

Practical Details

Plan for at least 3 hours. Serious aquarium fans will want 4-5 hours to see everything at a relaxed pace. Tickets are cheaper online than at the door, and combo tickets for both buildings save a few bucks. Parking is available in the garage next door, or park further out and walk along the Riverwalk - it's a nice warm-up.

The aquarium runs an IMAX theater next door as well, and they offer combo tickets if you want to add a film. Butterfly Garden is seasonal (spring through fall) and worth the add-on if it's running.

While You're Downtown

The aquarium sits right at the start of Chattanooga's best walking corridor. Head up Broad Street for restaurants and shopping, or walk along the river toward Coolidge Park and the Walnut Street Bridge. For food, Public House is a short walk away, and Urban Stack does excellent burgers. Frothy Monkey is solid for coffee and a lighter bite.

The Creative Discovery Museum is literally next door if you've got kids with energy to burn after the aquarium. And the Southern Belle Riverboat departs from the dock nearby - makes for a great evening cruise to cap the day. Browse more family activities around Chattanooga to build out your trip.
