Cloudland Canyon State Park

3,500 acres with 1,000-ft deep canyons, waterfalls, and 90+ miles of trails

Georgia's Best-Kept Secret, 30 Minutes from Chattanooga

Cloudland Canyon State Park sits on the western edge of Lookout Mountain, just over the Georgia line. It's about a 30-minute drive from downtown Chattanooga and it feels like another world. The canyon itself was carved by Sitton Gulch Creek over millions of years, cutting 800 feet deep into the sandstone. Standing on the rim looking down into it - with two waterfalls tumbling into the gorge below - is one of those moments where you understand why people move to this part of the country.

This isn't some roadside overlook. The park covers over 3,500 acres of rugged terrain, with miles of trails ranging from easy rim walks to strenuous descents into the canyon floor. It's a genuine wilderness experience that happens to be half an hour from a mid-sized city.

The Trails Worth Hiking

The Waterfall Trail is the headliner. It descends roughly 600 steps (yes, you'll count them on the way back up) to two waterfalls - Cherokee Falls and Hemlock Falls. Cherokee is the easier one to reach, about a quarter mile down. Hemlock requires the full staircase descent and a short creek crossing. Both are worth it, but Hemlock Falls is the showstopper - a 90-foot cascade into a grotto that feels like something from a nature documentary.

The West Rim Loop Trail is a 4.9-mile moderate hike along the canyon edge with multiple overlook points. You get different angles on the canyon throughout, and the mix of hardwood forest and rock formations keeps it interesting. The Sitton Gulch Trail drops all the way to the canyon floor over about 6 miles round trip - bring plenty of water and plan for a solid half-day hike.

For something easier, the Overlook Trail is a short paved path from the parking area to a viewing platform. It's wheelchair accessible and gives you that postcard canyon view in about five minutes of walking.

Beyond the Hiking

The park has excellent camping - both tent sites and backcountry camping along the longer trails. There are also yurts and cottages if you want the outdoor experience without sleeping on the ground. Disc golf, geocaching, and mountain biking are all available. The park hosts ranger-led programs on weekends that cover local geology and wildlife.

Rock climbing and rappelling are popular in the canyon, though you'll need your own equipment and experience. The sandstone walls attract climbers from across the Southeast.

Practical Tips

Georgia State Park parking requires a $5 daily pass, payable at the entrance station or online. The park opens at 7 AM and closes at 10 PM. Arrive early on weekends - the parking lot at the main trailhead fills up by mid-morning during fall color season and spring wildflower months.

Bring more water than you think you need, especially for the waterfall trail. Those 600 steps back up will make you thirsty. Sturdy shoes are non-negotiable. The trails are well-maintained but rocky in spots, and the waterfall approach can be slippery.

Make It a Day Trip

The drive from Chattanooga takes you through some pretty country along Lookout Mountain. Pack a cooler with lunch - there's a picnic area near the main overlook with tables and grills. On the way back to town, reward your effort with dinner at Champy's for fried chicken or Urban Stack for burgers. If you want to keep the outdoor day going, Sunset Rock Trail is on your way back and perfectly timed for an evening sunset after a day at Cloudland Canyon.
