Layering Meaning in Black Identity with Photographer Woodson Carpenter

Local photographer and poet Woodson Carpenter leads a hands-on workshop at the Hunter Museum of American Art on Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. It is inspired by the exhibition Free as they want to be: Artists Committed to Memory.

The workshop starts with a guided walkthrough of the exhibition. Participants then bring a photograph from their own life, printed or digital, swap images with someone else, and respond to the other person's photo through paint, pencil, poetry, prose or another form. Everyone leaves with something created in community.

The Hunter lists the program as free and open to all, with no registration required. Details are on the Hunter event page.
