Free as they want to be: Artists Committed to Memory
Free as they want to be: Artists Committed to Memory is on view at the Hunter Museum of American Art from October 1, 2026 through January 11, 2027. It presents contemporary art inspired by historical events, with work in photography, video, projection and mixed media.
The artists draw on archival materials and historic sites to address private and public memory as it relates to racism, segregation and slavery. The exhibition is curated by Cheryl Finley, Ph.D., and Deborah Willis, Ph.D., and began as a FotoFocus exhibition at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati. The traveling show is organized by Curatorial Exhibitions of Pasadena, California.
The museum is closed Tuesdays. Tickets can be bought at the museum or online in advance. See the Hunter for exhibition and visit details.
